Only compounds that reach substantial concentrations within these membrane microdomains are capable of acting as noncompetitive functional antagonists at the 5-HT3 receptor, whereas carbamazepine, moclobemide Eisensamer et al., 2003 ; , and risperidone Rammes et al., 2004 ; , which are not accumulated in these membrane fractions, are devoid of antagonistic properties at this ligand-gated ion channel. When considering the competitive antagonists mirtazapine and clozapine, only clozapine is enriched in LBD fraction, whereas mirtazapine is not. This would be compatible with the idea that mirtazapine acts solely as a competitive antagonist at the 5-HT3 receptor, whereas clozapine, in view of its relatively low binding affinity Hermann et al., 1996 and stavudine.
Trolled evidence supporting efficacy in dysthymic disorder sertraline ; 15 ; or other ``nonmajor'' disorders, such as premenstrual dysphoric disorder, including fluoxetine 60 ; , paroxetine 61 ; , and sertraline 62, 63 ; . However, when to select one over another agent is not well defined. Clinicians use ``rules of thumb'' to make these judgments, but such reasonable guesses are rarely supported by prospective RCT evidence. For example, more recently, efficacy for some antidepressants has been established for other psychiatric conditions commonly found in the presence of major depressive disorder, including: a ; venlafaxine for generalized anxiety disorder 64, 65 b ; paroxetine 66 ; and sertraline 67 ; for posttraumatic stress disorder; c ; fluoxetine 68 ; and sertraline 69 ; for obsessive compulsive disorder; and d ; fluoxetine 70 ; , paroxetine 71, 72 ; , and sertraline 73 ; for panic disorder. It is logical to argue that if a clinical depression is accompanied by a concurrent additional psychiatric disorder for which an antidepressant has established efficacy, then that agent is preferred because it should be effective for both disorders ; 3437 ; . However, this logical inference has not been evaluated prospectively in double-blind comparative trials. Another clue used to select among antidepressants is cross-sectional symptom features. As noted, depressions with atypical symptom features do less well on TCAs than MAOIs 44, 45 ; Depressions with psychotic features do better with a combination of an antipsychotic agent and a TCA than with a TCA alone 4649 ; . Although atypical or psychotic symptom features are useful in selecting among the TCAs, other cross-sectional symptom features have generally not been so useful. For example, a common belief is that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors SSRIs ; should be more effective than selective noradrenergic reuptake inhibitors SNRIs ; for major depression with marked anxiety. However, this contention has not withstood empirical study. Bupropion was as effective as sertraline in outpatients with major depressive disorder, whether pretreatment anxiety was high or low 74 ; . Similarly, higher levels of pretreatment insomnia are not associated with lower efficacy for fluoxetine or with preferential response to imipramine as compared to fluoxetine 75 ; . Reboxetine, an SNRI, is effective in both panic disorder 76 ; and depression 77, 78 ; . Although family history of response to a MAOI or TCA should point the clinician to choose between these two classes 79 ; , studies of family history and patient responses to newer agents are not available. Concurrent comorbid conditions logically recommend an initial agent, but this recommendation has not been evaluated prospectively. In the present double-blind, placebocontrolled study, we sought to determine whether the addition of reboxetine would prevent or attenuate olanzapine-induced weight gain in patients with schizophrenia and tinidazole and reboxetine.

Given the low magnitude of most of the significant correlations among the White girls r values ranged from 0.15 to 0.22 ; , power is a possible explanation for the failure to find significant relationships among the other girls. For example, in the Latina sample the nonsignificant correlations ranged from 0.02 to 0.21. The re-suspended aerosol was then diluted with clean air and fed to a compact cascade impactor recently developed at the Harvard School of Public Health Demokritou et al., 2004 ; . The collected samples were extracted using ultra-pure water and sonication. The extracted solution was then reduced using a rotovap and lyophilization. Effects was assessed by clinical interview, HAM-D depression ; , PANSS changes in psychotic symptoms ; , CGI-I S improvement severity ; , GAF social adaptation ; and UKU side-effects ; . T test was used to statistics analysis. Results: Evident improvement in depression decrease in HAM-D 50% ; was observed in 11 73% ; patients p 0.01 ; . Nobody showed relapse in psychotics symptoms and a sustained improvement in negative symptoms changes in PANSS negative subscale ; was registrated. There were no significantly side-effects dry mouth 23%, constipation 14%, headache 12% ; and no one discontinuation by adverse events. Conclusions: Study suggests that Reboxetne is effective, safe and well tolerated in treatment of depression in schizophrenia. A Chemist Tackles Qigong When Ken Sancier retired from SRI as a Senior Scientist in 1984, he cast about for a year to find a stimulating endeavor. He settled on Qigong, the basis of Traditional Chinese Medicine, known for its gentle movements, breathing and mediation exercises. Tai Chi and Yoga are both related to Qigong, but among these Qigong "chi-kung" ; is the oldest and has been subject to the most research. Ken thought that the many claims for its healing powers needed scientific testing. He experimented to demonstrate the effects of qigong on the body, and published 28 papers on his results. He has presented his research at conferences in Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo and San Francisco. In 1987, Sancier founded the Qigong Institute, a nonprofit corporation run by a volunteer staff. The Institute is supported by memberships, sale of DVDs of lectures and the Database CD, and donations. For details, see the website qigonginstitute . Sancier worked with the East-West Academy of Healing Arts to organize the First International Congress of Qigong, held in San Francisco. Together, they sponsored a series of some 60 lectures by teachers, practitioners and Qigong masters. Ten of these lectures are available on DVD's. Ash served on the Whitman Board of Trustees from 1982 to 1990, the last four years as Board Chair; he is now a Trustee Emeritus. In 1997 he received an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from Whitman. Pharmacological studies revealed the contribution of 5-HTR2c in locomotion, appetite, sexual behaviour, and anxiety. In addition, down regulation of 5-HTR2c has been reported in postmortem brains of patients with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. It has also been shown that RNA editing of 5-HTR2c, a post transcriptional mechanism that deeply influences receptor function, is altered both in patients suffering of depression and in a rat model of the disease. The aim of this study was the evaluation of the possible relationship between 5-HTR2c and antidepressants treatment in the prefrontal frontal cortex and in the hippocampus of rats treated with fluoxetine and reboxetine. We analysed, in the rat P FC and in HI, the 5-HTR2c mRNA expression and the RNA editing level of the five editing sites, A, B, C, C' and D, present in the 5-HTR2c. Using a quantitative RT-PCR approach, we examined the relative changes in the expression pattern of the 5-HTR2c of rats chronically treated with reboxetine and fluoxetine 10 mg kg die ; . The expression pattern of 5-HTR2c was found altered by both the antidepressants. In particular we found, in P FC, a trend towards down-regulation that became significant -44% ; only after 3 weeks of treatment with both antidepressants. Otherwise, in HI, reboxetine induced a statistically significant alteration in 5-HT2c expression pattern only after three weeks of treatment, with a decrease of 56%, while fluoxetine induced a 2fold up-regulation at 2 and 3 weeks of treatment. In our protocol of treatment, the analysis of the RNA editing level at the 5 editing sites did not evidenced any biological alteration induced by the antidepressants. Moreover, the frequency of the different 5-HTR2c edited isoforms was determined by analyzing individual cDNA clones derived from RNA samples collected from the control group and from rats treated for 3 weeks with RBX and FLX both in HI and in P FC. We could not find significant alterations of RNA editing in any of the conditions examined. Our results suggest that chronic administration of antidepressants do not alter the editing level of 5HTR2c but have deep influence on its expression pattern in an area and time specific manner. Such modification of 5-HTR2c expression may contribute to the efficacy of SSRI NRI antidepressants.
