Consistent use of condoms is associated with lower rates of acquisition of herpes simplex virus type 2 HSV-2 ; , according to the Annals of Internal Medicine. The authors observed 1, 842 subjects attending a sexually transmitted disease clinic who were at risk for HSV-2 acquisition. `At risk' was defined as having four or more sexual partners or having had another sexually transmitted disease during the previous year. The development of HSV type 1 HSV-1 ; and HSV-2 based on viral culture or seropositivity ; was assessed according to how frequently the subject used condoms: 0%-25%, 25%-75% or 75% of sexual acts. In all, 118 subjects at risk for HSV-2 6.4% ; became infected with HSV-2, and 19 of 659 subjects at risk of HSV-1 2.9% ; became infected with HSV-1. The relationship between condom use and infection with HSV-1 was not statistically significant in multivariate analyses. However, subjects with more frequent use of condoms were at significantly lower risk for acquiring HSV-2 than subjects with less condom use. Reducing the risk of HSV-2 infection is another good reason for condom use among people at high risk for sexually transmitted diseases, and the authors believe condom use should be routinely recommended to this population and proventil.

The concept map care plan is an innovative approach to planning and organizing nursing care. In essence, a concept map care plan is a diagram of patient problems and interventions. Your ideas about patient problems and treatments are the "concepts" that will be diagrammed. In this book, the term concept means idea. You will diagram your ideas about the patient's problems and their treatments. Developing clinical concept map care plans will enhance your critical thinking skills and clinical reasoning because you will clearly and succinctly visualize priorities and identify relationships in clinical patient data. Concept map care plans are used to organize patient data, analyze relationships in the data, establish priorities, build on previous knowledge, identify what you do not understand, and enable you to take a holistic view of the patient's situation, for instance, procardia overdose.
Depending on the coverage option you select, a deductible, copayment, coinsurance, or annual out-of-pocket maximum may apply. Here is a brief description of each feature. Deductibles The deductible is the specified dollar amount that you pay out of your pocket each year before the Health Plan pays benefits. See the How Your Coverage Option Pays Benefits section for the deductible if any ; that applies for your coverage. The individual deductible applies separately to each covered individual, and the family deductible applies collectively to all covered persons in the same family. Once you meet the family deductible, your remaining covered family members do not have to meet their individual deductible amounts for the rest of that year. Copayments A copayment is a specified dollar amount that you pay for certain services before the Health Plan pays benefits. See your coverage option under the How Your Coverage Option Pays Benefits section for the copay that applies for certain services. Copays generally apply to office visits, emergency room visits, therapy visits, prescription drugs, and vision care services. Copayments do not apply toward any deductible requirement you may have, coinsurance, or any annual outof-pocket maximum that may apply. Coinsurance Coinsurance is the percentage of eligible expenses you and the Health Plan are responsible for paying. Percentages apply after any applicable deductible or copayment amounts. The amount you pay depends on the coverage option you select, and if you receive care inside or outside the UPMC Advantage or UPMC Health Plan Networks. See your coverage option under the How Your Coverage Option Pays Benefits section for the percentage the Health Plan pays for each type of eligible expense and ranitidine.

The Practice Guidelines and the Quick Reference Guides are not intended to be construed or to serve as a standard of medical care. Standards of medical care are determined on the basis of all clinical data available for an individual patient and are subject to change as scientific knowledge and technology advance and practice patterns evolve. These parameters of practice should be considered guidelines only. Adherence to them will not ensure a successful outcome for every individual, nor should they be construed as including all proper methods of care or excluding other acceptable methods of care aimed at the same results. The ultimate judgment regarding a particular clinical procedure or treatment plan must be made by the psychiatrist in light of the clinical data presented by the patient and the diagnostic and treatment options available. Designing novel delivery systems times daily dosing regimen required for commonly used medications such as conventional Ritalin necessitated dosing during school hours. Additionally, issues of compliance and potential diversion were raised. And while a sustainedrelease formulation of Ritalin was available to patients, this medication was never fully embraced by the medical community or used extensively. While the rationale for a once-daily MPH tablet was clear, the path to developing such a treatment was much less so. Traditionally, oncedaily medications developed by ALZA and other drug delivery c o m have relied on a flat or zero-order drug delivery profile to administer continuous amounts of medication throughout the day. This approach serves as the foundation ALZA's efforts to develop Concerta TM began with a seemingly simplistic goal: to create a true once-daily formulation of MPH, the active ingredient in Ritalin . However, in the case of MPH, it soon became apparent that this approach would not be optimal. In fact, zero-order delivery of MPH Continued on page 3 The potential benefit of a oncedaily treatment was recognized by physicians, parents and patients to be significant. T. Trakarnvanich * 1, T. Chirananthavat2, S. Ariyakulnimit1, P. Maneerat1, S. Chabsuwan1 Medicine, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Medical College and Vajira hospital, bangkok, 2Medicine, Police General Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand Introduction: The purpose of this study has been to assess single-needle dialysis adequacy as well as other parameters that reflect dialysis efficiency, such as recirculation, hematocrit, calcium, phosphate level. The complications and adverse events were also evaluated. Time to achieve maximal adequacy of dialysis were compared between 4, 4.5, and 5.0 hours of dialysis session. Methods: Ten stable chronic renal failure patients who regularly used standard hemodialysis technique with double - needle DN ; were recorded for baseline data including Kt V, percent recirculation, calcium and phosphate level, hematocrit, and LDH level. Subsequently, all the patients were placed on single-needle SN ; dialysis for 3 consecutive duration, 4 hours, 4.5 hours and 5.0 hours respectively for 3 weeks each period. The same parameters were recorded at the end of each period Results: After switching to SN mode, the Kt V did not change significantly from the baseline value. However, subgroup analysis in twice weekly dialysis revealed some degree of reduction in Kt V value albeit not significance. In the thrice weekly group, the Kt V did not differ from the baseline value and achieved the target level according to the DOQI guideline. The other parameters such as hematocrit, calcium , phosphorus and LDH values were not different from the DN group. SN dialysis did not cause more recirculation than DN group and both were less than 10 percent. Conclusion: The SN dialysis has the same efficacy as the conventional DN technique in term of Kt V and other parameters such as calcium, phosphorus and LDH values. Both DN and SN caused less 10 percent recirculation .There were no reports of adverse events during the treatment period. The SN dialysis system therefore could be suitable for routine thrice weekly hemodialysis in selected group of patients. By RAY FELICIANO Since the time the printing press and movable type was invented by Johann Gutenberg around the year 1450 AD, mass media has been busy shaping, and at times manipulating, what people perceive to be `truth' or `reality'. Mass media, whether by print, radio, television, or now online via the Internet, inevitably provides the raw information from which people form their basic understanding of the world around them. Without the media, our `reality' and knowledge of events would rarely extend beyond the towns in which we lived, or that which we experienced ourselves directly. Think about it. For the vast majority of people, we really only `know' what is happening around the world because one or two news organizations told us so. For the most part, we have no practical way of verifying everything which is presented to us by the media, and will often assume the information to be fact. However, even if the information is true, it still is only one perspective of the `truth', which is that of the media organization presenting it. The limitation in this is that this myopic view of the world gives most people only a very limited, media filtered picture of the `truth', with little opportunity to consider alternative perspectives which may also be true, and worth exploring. Our individual opinions on a topic can be heavily influenced by the manner in which a story is presented. The presenters tone of voice, word selection, choice of questions, and their personal beliefs all can influence how their story is interpreted by the viewer, and the conclusions that the viewer may reach. Even the order in which the news stories are presented can make a large difference in how the viewer will perceive what is of great importance, and therefore what topics to which they should pay attention. Consider, for example, the.
