Above 98%, weight loss would be due to respiration. Initial water contents in lettuce leaves were 94.56 0.53 g 100 g w w ; After 170 h of storage the water contents of samples stored at 0C were 94.84 0.21 g 100 g w w ; samples stored at 8C they were 95.14 0.29 g 100 g and in samples stored at 15C they were 95.83 0.6 g 100 g w w ; These increases in water contents would correspond to water produced by respiration. While carbon dioxide is lost to the atmosphere, water is retained by the food and weight loss is independent of moisture loss Sastry and Buffington, 1982 ; . Polyethylene bags provide high relative humidity, so dehydratation typically is not a problem. However, moisture may condense on the inner surface of the bag, detracting visual appearance and providing conditions for microbial growth. Initial soluble solid contents in lettuce leaves were 3.9 0.24Brix. After 170 h of storage, the soluble solids contents of samples held at 0 and 8C were not significantly different from the initial value P 0.01 ; . However, in samples stored at 15C the final soluble solids contents were significantly lower P 0.01 ; P 0.01 ; P with a value of 3.06 0.32Brix. This decrease in soluble solids could be attributed to sugar consumption through respiration. Qscorbic acid contents: The initial ascorbic acid contents of lettuce leaves ranged between 6.0 and 16.6 mg 100 g of sample with a mean value of 10.9 2.9 mg 100 g n 40 ; Moreira et al. 2005 ; and Roura et al. 2003 ; reported similar initial mean values for ascorbic acid contents in lettuce leaves 8.3 1.0 and 9.4 1.6 mg 100 g of sample, respectively ; . The wide range of values for the initial ascorbic acid contents in lettuce leaves would reflect the influence of various factors such as climate conditions, cultural practices, maturity at harvest, harvesting method and post-harvest handling conditions Lee and Kader, 2000 ; . Of course, the inherent variability in biological systems would also contribute to this variability. First order kinetics is assumed for ascorbic acid degradation. Therefore, the natural logarithm of ascorbic acid contents ratio to the initial ascorbic acid contents against time should fall on a straight line with the slope representing the apparent reaction constant. Ascorbjc acid contents in lettuce leaves kept at the different storage temperature are presented in this way in Fig. 2. The slopes of the straight tendency lines for samples stored at 8 and 15C were not significantly different between themselves.

A range of body tissues accumulate the native vitamin and its fully active, oxidized form, dehydroascorbic acid. Tissues vary widely in content but the highest concentrations occur in the pituitary, adrenal gland, and gonads [2, 811]. Measurements of ascorbate in serum or plasma [8, 12, 13] show no consistent difference between the sexes, but it is unlikely that these estimates accurately represent the circulating level. Leukocytes, particularly neutrophils, possess very high concentrations [14] and are probably the primary vehicles for its distribution around the body. The average half-life in humans is about two weeks, with a turnover of 1 mg kg day and a body pool of 22 mg kg [15]. Ascorbci acid has three biological actions of particular relevance to reproduction, each dependent on its role as a reducing agent: it is required for the biosynthesis of collagen, for the biosynthesis of steroid and peptide hormones, and to prevent or reduce the oxidation of biomolecules. It is frequently involved in mixed-function oxidation, resulting in the incorporation of oxygen from molecular oxygen into a substrate [16]. The role of ascorbic acid in maintaining the structure of collagenous tissues is well known for historical reasons [2]. It is needed for the synthesis of collagen during tissue development and at sites of tissue damage, and also for the maintenance of the slow collagen turnover which occurs in mature tissues [17]. Acting as an electron donor, it is an essential co-factor for the enzymes that hydroxylate proline and lysine residues during the post-translational processing of pro-collagen [17, 18]. Hydroxylation occurs on residues located on the amino sides of regularly occurring glycine residues in the collagen precursor, and permits cross-linking and glycosylation. In the absence of ascorbate, the procollagen is unable to assume its trihelical conformation and cannot be secreted by the cell [17, 181. Ascorbate is also 262.

This study was carried out to investigate the fortification of vitamin C into milk by means of microencapsulation technique. The TBA value, sensory attributes, stability and bioavailability of iron microcapsules in milk during storage were measured. Coating materials used were polyglycerol monostearate PGMS ; and medium-chain triacylglycerol MCT ; , and core materials were L-ascorbic acid and ferric ammonium sulfate. The yield of microencapsulated vitamin C was 95 % with MCT and was 94 % with PGMS when the ratio of coating material to core materials were 15 : 1, 5 respectively. The rate of vitamin C release was 4 9% when stored at 4 for 30 days, and temperature lower than 20 did not affect adversely vitamin C release in the milk during the storage. The TBA value was significantly lower in microencapsulated than those in uncapsulated vitamin C during storage. In sensory evaluation, the degree of sourness and off-taste were slight and total acceptability was moderate in 10mg vitamin C microencapsule -fortified milk at 8 day storage. In vitro study, microcapsules of vitamin C in simulated gastric fluid with the range of 2 to pHs were released 4.713.2%, however, the capsules in simulated intestinal fluid with pH 8 were released 94.0% during 40 min incubation time. In the bioavailability of iron in vivo, transferrin saturation value of microencapsulated vitamin C and iron was two and half times higher than that of uncapsulated. In conclusion, this study provided that MCT and PGMS as coating materials were suitable for the microencapsulation of vitamin C and the microcapsules were effective on the bioavailability of fortified iron in milk. Key Words: Vitamin C and Iron, Microencapsulation, Milk.

Compared to the previous year, group equity rose by EUR 298 million, although the included minority interests held by other shareholders fell. As a result of the increased balance sheet total, the equity ratio was reduced to 37.9 %, from 38.3 % the previous year. Long-term disposable capital, comprising equity and long-term provisions and liabilities, accounted for 59 % of the balance sheet total at the end of 2003. It thereby covered all intangible and tangible assets, as well as inventories, receivables and part of the liquid assets. The Corporation's liquidity, its given financial structure and available funding potential have established the preconditions for successfully tracking our strategic goals. Value added In the reporting year, the Corporation achieved a corporate performance of EUR 7, 842 million. The slight decline -1 % ; is attributable to our conversion-related lower net sales, which were partially offset by other earnings. After the deduction of purchased materials, depreciations and other third party services, the value added stood at EUR 3, 125 million. The distribution structure shows that the greatest share, i. e. 72 %, of the value added, went to remuneration, social costs and pension contributions for employees. Net income represented 17 % of value added, thereby remaining at the previous year's level. Research and Development In line with our corporate vision "Value through Innovation", our goal is to research and develop new drugs that represent distinct therapeutic progress, thereby providing benefit to people and.

Release in prefrontal cortex has not been reported. The present study demonstrated for the rst time that ethanol induced AA release in the prefrontal cortex, further suggesting a close link between ethanol-induced AA release in the prefrontal cortex and in the striatum. There is current interest in the role of ethanol-induced oxidative stress in the injury of the central nervous system.29 ; Intake of ethanol aSects the activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase and GSH-Px in the brain.30 ; Ethanol can induce superoxide anion or hydrogen peroxide formation in animals.31 ; It is believed that ascorbic acid, as a classical antioxidant, plays a major role in protecting brain against oxidative damage.32, 33 ; Previous studies have shown that endogenous released ascorbic and diphenhydramine and ascorbic.

In In re Federated Department Stores, Inc. Securities Litigation, the court explained that the two methods of pleading scienter in the Second Circuit--by alleging either facts to show that the defendant had both motive and opportunity to commit fraud, or facts that constitute strong circumstantial evidence of conscious misbehavior or recklessness--remain "separate and distinct, " such that plaintiffs cannot establish scienter by combining generalized allegations of motive with equally insufficient allegations of conscious misbehavior.9 With regard to corporate defendants, courts in the Second Circuit repeatedly have held that allegations of motive "generally possessed by most corporate directors and officers" are insufficient, 10 including " 1 ; maintaining a bond or credit rating, 2 ; prolonging executive compensation, 3 ; increasing executive compensation by inflating the value of a stock, and 4 ; making the issuer appear profitable."11 The allegations in In re NTL, Inc. Securities Litigation of officers' desire to maintain access to capital markets, abide by credit agreements, and protect their compensation, were insufficient to plead scienter. Similarly, incentive compensation--tying officers' compensation to the company's financial performance--was insufficient to demonstrate motive in In re American Express Co. Securities Litigation12 and In re Bristol-Myers Squibb Securities Litigation.13 A desire to effectuate an important merger, "generalized.

ROS are generated by a number of pathways. Most of the oxidants produced by cells occur as: A consequence of normal aerobic metabolism: approximately 90% of the oxygen utilized by the cell is consumed by the mitochondrial electron transport system. Oxidative burst from phagocytes white blood cells ; as part of the mechanism by which bacteria and viruses are killed, and by which foreign proteins antigens ; are denatured. Xenobiotic metabolism, i.e., detoxification of toxic substances. Consequently, things like vigorous exercise, which accelerates cellular metabolism; chronic inflammation, infections, and other illnesses; exposure to allergens and the presence of "leaky gut" syndrome; and exposure to drugs or toxins such as cigarette smoke, pollution, pesticides, and insecticides may all contribute to an increase in the body's oxidant load. ANTIOXIDANT PROTECTION To protect the cells and organ systems of the body against reactive oxygen species, humans have evolved a highly sophisticated and complex antioxidant protection system. It involves a variety of components, both endogenous and exogenous in origin, that function interactively and synergistically to neutralize free radicals.4 These components include: Nutrient-derived antioxidants like ascorbic acid vitamin C ; , tocopherols and tocotrienols vitamin E ; , carotenoids, and other low molecular weight compounds such as glutathione and lipoic acid. Antioxidant enzymes, e.g., superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione reductase, which catalyze free radical quenching reactions. Metal binding proteins, such as ferritin, lactoferrin, albumin, and ceruloplasmin that sequester free iron and copper ions that are capable of catalyzing oxidative reactions. Numerous other antioxidant phytonutrients present in a wide variety of plant foods.

Effect of the combination was to enhance or to inhibit the oxidation is emphasized by the ratio kilk which is the ratio of the rate constant for the catalysts in combination to the rate constant assuming a n additive effect. The 1.8 X 10-6 and 1.8 X 10-5 M concentrations of ascorbic acid were most effective in enhancing the reaction. The higher concentrations of ascorbic acid when used in conjunction with the higher concentrations of copper, completely inhibited formation of conjugated dienes. Fig. 2 illustrates the concurrent oxidation of ascorbic acid and linoleate when the reaction mixture initially.
Radiofrequency destruction of the third occipital nerve can yield excellent long-term resolution of the pain. When pain over the C2-3 zygapophysial facet ; joint is elicited by simple palpation and confirmed by diagnostic nerve blocks, the thermal destruction of this nerve a highly skilled procedure ; was shown to produce complete resolution of the pain in 88 percent of the patients studied. This result is impressive, since before this procedure, few treatment options were available. Ultimately, it is extremely rewarding for these chronic pain sufferers to trade their bag of pain medications for a candid and open smile. Reference Govind J, King W, Bailey B, Bogduk.
