Discussion Several studies have reported high recurrence rates of H. pylori infection after apparently successful eradication 20 ; . Now, of course, one of the concerns was that maybe women represented higher cases because they were using more of these drugs, and it turns out when they went back to look at the number of prescriptions written the highest prevalence that they could come up for women would be 44 percent. So, that did not explain the 70 percent greater incidence of torsades in women. Back to the case report that I initially started with about the 39-year-old woman with torsades associated with terfenadine. This opened up many questiions, one of which is that there are other drugs and antiarrhythmic drugs that may be associated with torsades, and again, the question came up are women at higher risk. The investigators queried the FDA spontaneous reporting database and found that of 25 cases of torsades associated with terfenadeine that were reported 15 or 60 percent of them were in women. They found out that six of the patients had cirrhosis or had a history of alcohol abuse and three of the patients were older, 69, 72 and 74 years old. It opens new options of Internet shopping for authorized users. "We're excited about DeCA's first adventure into the world of Internet shopping, " said Patrick Nixon, chief executive officer and acting director for the Defense Commissary Agency. Virtual Commissary products can be found on the shelves of base commissaries, but the unique packaging of products into gift and special occasion baskets adds a new twist. Baskets offer assortments of crackers, canned cheeses, cookies, candies and even beverages and coffee packs. To access Virtual Commissary, shoppers pass through a secure portal found under the shopping link at commissaries . Personal information entered by the customer is validated to ensure they are an authorized shopper, using the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System. Shipping and handling charges are similar to other Internet shopping sites, and charges vary on the method of shipping, location and speed of delivery requested. Payment for orders can be made with any credit card accepted in "real" commissaries. KOSHER FOODS ON COMMISSARY SHELVES - Whether you are Jewish, a vegetarian, lactose intolerant, or just plain healthconscious, kosher foods might just fit the bill for you. "Many commissary customers are looking for kosher foods in everyday meals, " said Max Goldfarb of the Defense Commissary Agency. Non-Jewish customers purchase about 80 percent of all kosher products, according to Goldfarb. A study of ethnic foods showed kosher to be an "expanding market, " just behind Italian and Mexican and ahead of Chinese, Goldfarb says. Kosher means "fit" or "proper." "Many people think a rabbi blesses the meat, " said Goldfarb. "He actually supervises the kosher-making process. It takes three hours to process a kosher chicken, compared to 45 minutes for a non-kosher chicken." Are the kosher meats really better? "Well, fat is still fat, and sugar is still sugar, " he said. "But overall, kosher products are perceived to be healthier because of the extra pair of eyes during inspection and the elimination of animal fat from many products." Customers who are lactose intolerant lactose is the predominant sugar in milk ; know they can pick up an item labeled "parve" and be assured it has no milk.
